BARTON HOUSE - The Farmhouse
Barton House was built for the Duke of Devonshire in about 1840 as the main house for an important tenant. Hope Barton farm extended at that time to 500 acres, a large enterprise, hence the substantial house and extensive range of stone barns. Although built of the same stone as the barns the house was rendered to distinguish it from them, as befits someone of standing in the locality.
Barton House stands in an unrivalled, sunlit position and contains three magnificent apartments all with stunning views across the valley to the South and West. The changing colours on the bracken covered hills as evening falls, or seasons change, is enjoyed from within, or from the privacy of the walled garden with its profusion of country flowers, shrubs and trees. Inside the rooms all benefit from the high ceilings and generous sash windows typical of a period house from 150 years ago. Fireplaces with attractive mantles have been restored.
Quality has been a priority at Hope Barton and in the house no detail has been overlooked. Throughout there is hand-crafted solid beech furniture, subtle lighting, natural coloured carpets and soft fabrics in harmony with elegance in a rural setting. In the living rooms a pull-down double bed has been cleverly concealed in a range of handmade cupboards, providing luxury and comfort when additional accommodation is required. The apartments are all fully equipped and come with a range of pictures and ornaments and 'Emma Bridgewater' pottery.
Sitting proudly at the centre of its own farm grounds and surrounded by Devon countryside, Barton House offers beautiful holiday homes of varying size, which all have the feeling of spaciousness and grace from living in such a charming period house.
